It is believed that images are more balanced and interesting when not centered. Imagine placing a grid over the image with two horizontal and two vertical lines to divide it into nine sections. You would place your main subject or important parts of a photo along the line or where they intersect if you followed the Rule of Thirds. You can even turn on a grid in some cameras, useful for those who are still learning how to compose their images. You may choose to ignore this rule at times and include the main points of interest in another part of your photograph. It’s perfectly fine to break this rule. But before you do, make sure you know it, and that you are in the habit of thinking about where and how you will place the point of interest.

When shooting portraits, you’ll be focusing on a very small area so it will be more important than ever that you get a nice sharp image. The eyes in particular are an important facial feature, and they’re often the first thing people look at, especially when it comes to close-ups and headshots.  With this in mind, your subject’s eyes should be your main point of focus. To get both eyes nice and sharp, choose a single focus point and aim it at one of the eyes. Once the first eye is in focus, keep the shutter button pressed halfway down and move the camera slightly to recompose the photo and include the second eye.
